The South Asian Bar Association of Calgary (SABA Calgary) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving and strengthening the South Asian legal community in Calgary by providing a recognized and trusted forum for professional growth and advancement, and promoting access to the legal system for the South Asian community.
To provide mentorship and support for South Asian lawyers and law students; to create networking and professional development opportunities for lawyers and law students.
To promote diversity and inclusion efforts that ensure equal participation in the legal profession and greater representation in the judiciary.
To educate the South Asian community by providing legal information and access to a network of pro bono services.
Harinder Basra is a Partner at Bennett Jones LLP and practises corporate and securities law, with a particular emphasis on advising public and private companies on mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings, shareholder activism, corporate governance and general corporate matters.
His practice focuses on advising domestic and international clients on transactions in the energy industry. Harinder provides practical legal advice to a diverse group of clients, from start-ups to multinational dual-listed issuers. His clients include public and private entities, private equity funds and investment banks.
Andy practices in the Family Law group at Vogel LLP as a lawyer, mediator and arbitrator. He has appeared successfully before the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, the Alberta Court of Appeal and has been involved in Applications for Leave to Appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. Andy has extensive trial experience before the Court of King’s Bench and significant experience advocating for clients at the Alberta Court of Appeal.
Janan is a Partner at Torys LLP where his practice focuses on corporate and securities law, with an emphasis on international transactions. He has an efficient, practical approach that comes from an extensive background of experience representing public and private issuers in a wide variety of financing, business combination and public and private M&A transactions. Janan also regularly counsels clients across sectors on their securities compliance matters, commercial transactions, and corporate finance, procedures and governance.
Janan is the co-leader of Torys’ Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
Sameena Sarangi is a Partner in the Financial Services Group in the Calgary office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Her practice is focused on advising lenders and borrowers on a broad range of debt financing transactions, both syndicated and bilateral, including acquisition financings, cross-border financings, project financings, asset-based financings and real estate financings. Sameena also has significant experience advising clients on a wide array of corporate and commercial matters.
Prior to joining BLG, Sameena practiced in the banking and finance group at an international law firm. She has also previously worked at a large financial institution where she advised on regulatory, compliance and corporate governance matters.
Harman is a civil litigator with Badyal Toor. Harman’s area of expertise covers a variety of areas including personal injury/motor vehicle accidents, contract disputes, shareholder & partnership disputes, commercial leases, construction litigation and builders’ liens, loan recovery, real estate litigation, business law litigation, estate litigation, employment disputes, franchises, intellectual property disputes, and insurance coverage claims.
Harman has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta and represented clients appearing before various administrative boards and tribunals, including the Trademarks Opposition Board, Alberta Environmental Appeals Board, Calgary Real Estate Board, and Complaints Inquiry Committee of the Certified Management Accountants of Alberta.
Jessica is counsel for the Canada Energy Regulator in Calgary and practices in the areas of regulatory, litigation, labour and employment, privacy and human rights law. She was previously an associate with an international law firm in Calgary and also clerked with the Alberta Court of Appeal. Jessica is an appointed tribunal member of the Alberta Human Rights Commission and also volunteers with the University of Calgary Public Interest Law Clinic.
